The Donald Peterson Student Travel Award Subcommittee invites applications from archival science students and recent graduates of archival programs. The award subsidizes travel to the SAA Annual Meeting for students presenting research or actively participating in an SAA-sponsored committee, section, or roundtable.

Purpose and Criteria for Selection

Established in 2005, this award supports students and recent graduates from graduate archival programs within North America to attend SAA’s Annual Meeting. The goal of the scholarship is to stimulate greater participation in the activities of the Association by students and recent graduates. This participation must include either a presentation of research during the Annual Meeting or active participation in an SAA-sponsored committee, section, or roundtable.

Eligibility

Awarded to an SAA member in good standing who is currently enrolled in an archival education program or who graduated from an archival education program in the previous calendar year. Applications are evaluated based on the merits of the applicant’s essay and letters of recommendation.

Sponsor and Funding

The Society of American Archivists, in honor of Donald Peterson (1908-1999), New York lawyer and philatelist, whose deep appreciation of world history and preservation developed early through his stamp collecting and held true throughout his life.

Prize

Up to $1,000 in support of registration, travel, and accommodation expenses associated with the SAA Annual Meeting.

1. A 500-word essay describing the applicant’s career goals and potential impact on the archival profession.

Unofficial transcript to verify student status or copy of graduate diploma.
Two letters of recommendation from individuals having definite knowledge of the applicant’s qualifications.

The annual Leland Award – a cash prize and certificate – recognizes “writing of superior excellence and usefulness in the field of archival history, theory, and practice.”

Established in 1959, this award honors American archival pioneer Waldo Gifford Leland (1879-1966), president of the Society of American Archivists in the1940s and one of the driving forces behind the founding of the National Archives.

The Philip M. Hamer and Elizabeth Hamer Kegan Award Subcommittee of the Society of American Archivists seeks nominations (including self-nominations) for the 2017 award.

 This award recognizes an archivist, editor, group of individuals, or institution that has increased public awareness of a specific body of documents through compilation, transcription, exhibition, or public presentation of archives or manuscript materials for educational, instructional, or other public purpose. Archives may include photographs, films, and visual archives. Publication may be in hard copy, microfilm, digital, or other circulating medium.

MAC is soliciting applications for the 2016 Archie Motley Memorial Scholarship for Minority Students. The scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to minority students pursuing graduate education in archival administration and to encourage ethnic diversification of the MAC membership and of the archival profession as a whole. Two $750 scholarships, accompanied by one-year memberships to MAC, will be awarded.

In order to be eligible for a scholarship, the applicant must be of African, American Indian, Asian or Pacific Islander, or Latino decent; must be a student currently enrolled in or accepted in a graduate, multicourse program in archival administration; and must have a grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in his or her academic program. If the program is not listed in the SAA Directory of Archival Education, http://archivists.org/prof-education/edd-index.asp, the applicant must provide proof of the multicourse standard by submitting copies of course descriptions from the institution’s current departmental catalog. Applicants are not required to be residents of or attend school in the MAC region.

The SAA Spotlight Award Subcommittee invites nominations for the 2016 Spotlight Award.  This award “recognizes the contributions of individuals who work for the good of the archives profession and of archival collections, and whose work would not typically receive public recognition.”  Nominees do not have to be members of SAA.  Please share this message as you think appropriate.  I hope you will consider recognizing a colleague (or yourself!) in this way.  Additional information about the criteria and process is found below.

*   Participating in special projects.

*   Performing extraordinary volunteerism.
*   Quietly but effectively promoting the profession.

Eligibility:  Awarded to an individual archivist or a group of up to five archivists who have collaborated on a project. Preference is given to archivists working in smaller repositories, especially those without institutional support for professional activities.

Sponsor and Funding:  The Society of American Archivists Foundation.

What it is: An informative and fun day, with a variety of workshops and attendee-driven conversations, covering all aspects of Teaching with Primary Sources. The New York State Archives is pleased to announce its Documentary Heritage Program (DHP) grants for 2015-2016. DHP Grant Guidelines and Application for 2015-2016 are now available on the New York State Archives website.

Postmark deadline is Friday, April 24, 2015 for projects to be carried out from July 1, 2015-June 30, 2016.

We are writing to let you know of changes that are planned for the regional services portion of the New York State Archives Documentary Heritage Program (DHP).  Our aim is to move the DHP in a direction that will bring the best quality and most comprehensive services to New York’s historical records community with the resources available to us.

DHP Regional Services
For over 25 years the DHP regional services have provided technical assistance and training through contracts between the New York State Education Department (SED) and nine regional providers, which have included seven 3Rs library councils, the Museum Association of New York, and the Greater Hudson Heritage Network. We thank the organizations that have contributed to the success of this program and advancements in preservation and access for New York’s heritage.

When the contracts between the SED and these agencies expire on June 30, 2014, there will be changes to the contractual process for operating this part of the program.  The DHP competitive grants program will not change and will continue to be operated from the New York State Archives’ central offices.

Service Delivery Changes
Instead of nine separate DHP contracts, the SED will seek a single, statewide five-year contract to deliver a set of supports and educational services for eligible archives, libraries, historical societies, museums, and other institutions that hold historical records and/or library research materials and operate programs to preserve them and make them accessible. The contract will cover DHP services and also incorporate elements of the New York State Library’s Conservation/Preservation Program.

Interim Assistance
Until the new statewide contract is in place, the State Archives will provide basic support to the historical records community through email and phone communications and delivery of on-line resources. Repositories in need of archival assistance may contact Pamela Cooley at the New York State Archives (pcooley@mail.nysed.gov, (518) 474-5393) starting July 1 and until further notice. For preservation-related assistance, organizations may continue to contact Barbara Lilley at the New York State Library (blilley@mail.nysed.gov, (518) 486-4864).
